Beginner’s Guide to Buying at Auction
Everything you need to know about buying at Cooper Barrington — registration, bidding, fees and delivery.
Whether you’re a seasoned collector or attending your first auction, this guide explains everything you need to know about buying at Cooper Barrington.
What types of auctions does Cooper Barrington hold?
We hold regular sales from our chapel saleroom in Froncysyllte, North Wales. Our primary sales are Antiques & Collectables auctions featuring fine art, jewellery, silver, ceramics, furniture, clocks and more. We also hold General Auctions for a broader range of household goods and mixed lots. All auctions are available both in person and online.
How do I register to bid at Cooper Barrington?
In person: Arrive at the saleroom before the auction, bring photo ID and register at reception. You will receive a numbered bidding paddle.
Online: Create a free account on our website and you can browse the catalogue and place bids.
Can I bid online from anywhere in the world?
Yes. Our own online bidding platform allows you to bid live from anywhere with an internet connection. You can place live bids during the auction or set a maximum bid in advance.
What is the buyers / vendors premium and how much is it?
The premium is charged on the hammer price to both buyers and sellers at the same rate:
- Antiques & Collectables: 28% + VAT of hammer price, plus £4.00 + VAT entry fee per lot
- General Auctions: 24% + VAT of hammer price (no entry fee)
Online bidding: Any lots purchased online will be subject to an additional live fee + VAT (see the provider’s terms and conditions for the rates). Bidding on Cooper Barrington LLP’s own online bidding platform (powered by HiBid) is 3%. Third-party platforms such as the-saleroom.com and BidSpirit charge their own additional premiums.
What is an absentee bid and how does it work?
An absentee bid allows you to leave your highest bid with the auctioneer before the sale. The auctioneer bids on your behalf up to your maximum — you only pay enough to beat the next highest bid. Absentee bids can be left in person, by phone, email, or through the online platform. Bids must be submitted in writing at least 24 hours before the sale.
How do condition reports work?
Request a condition report by emailing cooperbarringtonllp@gmail.com. Condition reports are given in good faith as statements of opinion. We strongly recommend viewing items in person during scheduled viewing days.
What happens after I win a lot?
Risk passes to the buyer on the fall of the hammer. You will receive an invoice showing the hammer price, premium and VAT. Payment must be made promptly — interest at 8% is charged on unpaid lots after 48 hours. Lots not paid for within 14 days may be re-offered or returned to the vendor.
How does delivery and shipping work?
- In-house packing & courier delivery — UK and overseas
- Collection & delivery service — mainland UK
- Dry storage warehouse — at our Froncysyllte premises
Contact cooperbarringtonllp@gmail.com for a shipping quote.
What if I have a problem with my purchase?
All lots are sold under caveat emptor (buyer beware) and are sold “as is”. Catalogue descriptions are statements of opinion. Refunds are only considered if a written condition report was obtained before the sale and the item is materially different. Claims must be in writing within 7 days; returns accepted within 14 days in the same condition as sold.
